Energy, Climate & Environment

We use resources responsibly and reduce our emissions at our headquarters, travel agencies and hotels. REWE Group Germany has established a central energy management system (EnMS) in accordance with DIN EN ISO 50001, which includes DER Touristik in Germany. Although DER Touristik only contributes marginally to the total energy consumption of REWE Group Germany, our company takes opportunities to improve energy efficiency and sets its own energy targets (electricity and heat), based on the overarching goals of REWE Group.

Beyond the measures taken in the course of our EnMS, we are not only reducing our climate footprint in our own business scope but are also adopting measures that relate to our value chain (scope 3). As part of our climate strategy, we are optimising paper consumption and employee behavior with regard to business travel, among other things. However, in this scope 3, the focus is on making our products more climate-friendly. We are aware that a large part of our emissions are caused by the products we sell, and therefore we strive to achieve a lower climate footprint As a first step, our products will be optimised via a steering effect. This means creating transparency about the climate impact of our products and providing information about more climate-friendly alternatives. Our guests will be sensitised appropriately, sales will be managed toward more climate-friendly products, and service providers will be involved and incentivised to design climate-efficient products. At the same time, it remains essential to offer our travelers the opportunity to make a climate contribution for the generated emissions. In a later step, products will also be phased out. However, this will only be done once the incentive effect has been exhausted.

In order to further sensitize customers to the climate impact of their travel and possible climate-friendly alternatives, we are committed to establishing a uniform basis for calculating the climate footprint of travel. In the fall of 2021, we joined forces with Futouris e. V., the industry initiative for sustainable tourism, to conduct a feasibility study on the creation of a CO2 cadastre, which was transferred to the industry project “Climate-conscious Travel” in 2022. The project resulted in forming the KlimaLink e.V. association in October 2022, in which we are actively involved as a founding member. Together with other players in the industry, we are working on calculating and showing the emissions of travel and travel components. The aim is to reduce the climate footprint of traveling, of the industry as a whole, and also of us our company.
